circHIPK3 is up-regulated in folic acid-induced renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis and in human cTIN fibrotic kidney tissue. It localizes mainly to the cytoplasm and exacerbates fibrosis by sponging miR-30a, thereby increasing TGF-beta1 and downstream profibrotic factors (FN, COL1) in a feed-forward loop.
