circHIPK3 is down-regulated in islets of diabetic db/db mice. Its knockdown in beta-cells impairs glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, reduces beta-cell proliferation, and increases apoptosis, potentially via sequestering multiple miRNAs (e.g., miR-124-3p, miR-338-3p) and regulating key beta-cell genes such as Akt1, Slc2a2, and Mtpn.
