| Biological function: |
Required for exercise-induced physiological cardiac hypertrophy; protects against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion-induced acute injury and pathological cardiac remodeling; promotes cardiomyocyte growth and survival; attenuates cardiomyocyte apoptosis, cardiac dysfunction, and fibrosis. |
| Molecular mechanism: |
circUtrn directly binds PP5 and promotes PP5 degradation through the ubiquitin-proteasome system, resulting in activation of MAPK/ERK signaling; SF3B1 acts as an upstream regulator of circUtrn. |

| Clinical significance: |
Serum circUtrn was significantly increased in long-term exercise training adult men and may act as a new serum biomarker for prognosis among several cardiac diseases; circUtrn elevation may hold therapeutic promise in I/R injury patients. |
| Description: |
circUtrn is an exercise-induced, conserved circRNA derived from Utrn that is downregulated in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury models. It promotes physiological cardiac hypertrophy and cardiomyocyte survival, while its overexpression protects against acute I/R injury and pathological cardiac remodeling. Mechanistically, circUtrn binds PP5, promotes PP5 ubiquitin-proteasome-dependent degradation, and activates MAPK/ERK signaling; SF3B1 functions as an upstream regulator. |
