Clinical significance:

Intestinal mucosal tissues from patients with active CD and UC and sepsis showed decreased circHIPK3 levels and were associated with severe mucosal injury/erosions, inflammation, delayed healing and gut barrier dysfunction.

Description:

circHIPK3 is reduced in human intestinal mucosa from IBD and sepsis patients, and it promotes intestinal epithelial wound repair and epithelial renewal. Mechanistically, it acts as a miR-29b sponge to relieve miR-29b-mediated repression of targets such as Rac1, Cdc42 and cyclin B1, supporting migration/proliferation during restitution.
