| Biological function: |
CircSMARCA5 acts as a potential tumor suppressor in HCC; its overexpression inhibits proliferation, promotes apoptosis, and suppresses invasion and metastasis-related features. |
| Molecular mechanism: |
Overexpression of circSMARCA5 decreased MMP7 and MMP9 mRNA and protein expression in Huh7 cells; detailed molecular mechanisms in HCC were not determined. |

| Clinical significance: |
CircSMARCA5 levels were correlated with tumor differentiation, TNM stage, cancer invasion, and cancer diameter; plasma circSMARCA5 showed diagnostic value for HCC and may serve as a potential prediction and monitor biomarker, especially in patients with low AFP. |
| Description: |
CircSMARCA5 is down-regulated in HCC tissues and plasma, and lower expression is associated with more aggressive clinicopathological features. Functionally, circSMARCA5 overexpression suppresses HCC cell proliferation, invasion/metastasis-related markers, and promotes apoptosis, accompanied by reduced MMP7 and MMP9 expression. Plasma circSMARCA5 shows diagnostic potential for HCC, including in patients with AFP below the cutoff value. |
